Cineplex Entertainment’s history has roots dating back to 1912, when the Famous Players Film Corporation was founded by Adolph Zukor.
In 1979, Cineplex Odeon Corp was created. In 1999, Ellis Jacob and Steve Brown formed Galaxy Entertainment, a business designed to bring big-city entertainment to mid-sized markets across Canada. In 2013, Cineplex Entertainment acquired 24 of the Empire Theatre chain from Atlantic Canada to become a truly national company for the first time.

At Cineplex, we were named one of Canada’s Most Admired Corporate Cultures. And in 2014, our president and CEO Ellis Jacob was named one of Canada’s Most Admired CEOs. Why? Cineplex employees are a talented group of individuals, who are diverse, driven, passionate, and proud of the work they do.
We’ve built an award-winning culture by promoting equality and creating a supportive work environment where all our employees are encouraged to be themselves.
Diversity is a key social responsibility at Cineplex. In 2013, we partnered with Pride at Work Canada to promote, support, and encourage authenticity at a corporate level, as well as create a workplace where LGBT employees are able to be themselves and, ultimately, be more productive.
We also encourage individuals with special needs to apply to join our teams. Cineplex offers employment experiences to any person who enjoys interacting with the public and who has a passion for movies. Visit our Careers page online if you are interested in working with us.
Aside from Cineplex’s stellar team, exceptional workplace culture, state-of-the-art entertainment—and, of course, all the popcorn perks—we’re also committed to giving back to our communities by supporting our national charity partner Free the Children, as well as other charitable organizations.
Corporate environmental sustainability is also a key part of the commitment we make to the communities in which we live and work. For instance, at Cineplex we use Forest Stewardship Council certified paper for all print materials (including popcorn bags), foster ongoing conversion of all incandescent lights to energy efficient LED lighting, and install custom recycling units for guests to use within our theatres.
