SUMMARY:

The Delta School District is seeking a highly motivated senior-level accountant to join the financial services team. This position offers the opportunity for career development and growth for the right individual.

Reports to and works under the direction of the Manager, Financial Services. Participates in the processing of complex accounting transactions, prepares adjustments to the general ledger, performs reconciliations, prepares financial reports, and conducts financial reviews of School Generated Funds. Provides direction and training to departmental and school staff on accepted accounting guidelines and procedures (Public Sector Accounting Standards - PSAS), accounting systems, and compliance issues. Performs detailed district financial accounting in a timely manner with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. Accurate, detailed, and up-to-date records are an integral part of the district's ability to meet reporting requirements and to provide internal decision-makers with necessary pertinent information.

QUALIFICATIONS: Successful completion of a secondary school graduation program or equivalent. Education equivalent to successful completion of the two common core modules of the current CPA Canada Professional Education Program (PEP). Minimum of five years of related progressive accounting experience, in a computerized financial accounting department, preferably in a public sector environment. The experience should be of a senior level with a solid understanding of general accounting principles and practices and their applications to a wide variety of transactions. Knowledge of audit theory and principles. An advanced level of computer literacy including extensive experience using financial software, spreadsheets, and word processing, (i.e. Excel, Word, Email, CIMS Finance or a similar ERP application, Schoolbooks or a similar application).

Able to conduct diverse, complex, and specialized accounting work. Able to work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.

Able to focus and exhibit continuous concentration for long periods of time with frequent interruptions.

Demonstrates initiative and is able to exercise sound judgment and prioritize tasks. Able to work either in a team environment or independently with minimum supervision. Able to work quickly and accurately and exercise independent judgment. Able to work under pressure for extended periods of time to meet tight deadlines.

Able to analyze a variety of technical data. Remains current with technological and accounting concepts, policies, and equipment.

Maintains strong working relationships with district departments, school staff, bank personnel, and system software developers. Continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to internal customer service.

Possesses strong communication skills, to be able to clearly and concisely explain financial and procedural concepts and policies, both verbally and in writing. Able to communicate using patience and courtesy.

Demonstrates judgment and tact when providing information to internal and external parties.

Physically capable of performing the duties of the position. May be required to sit for extended periods of time. Able to operate a variety of office equipment.
