Specialization in Special Education is an asset, as is experience with complex needs students.
The successful candidate should have strong relationship building skills, student-centered philosophy of education, the ability to be flexible and be able to collaborate with a classroom team. CASA Classrooms have partnered with the FMPSD and the FMCSD to deliver clinical intervention and individualized programming in a local classroom setting to address the need for intensive mental health services in Fort McMurray. The learning environment will bridge a childs mental health and academic needs through a comprehensive and coordinated approach by a mental health team and a classroom teacher.
Students must be referred by their school division and will be assessed for eligibility and suitability for this program. There will be group therapy, individual therapy, and psychiatric care built into the structure of the school day. The classroom will be supported by a teacher, Mental Health Therapist, and a Mental Health Aide, with access to a team of wrap around services.
The instructional focus will be individualized with a focus on literacy and numeracy skill building. The project will run for one year, with the potential of extending into a second year with two intakes of up to 12 students (per semester). The goal is to support students in their mental wellness to transition to regular classroom settings.
Courses are taught from a combination of modular and individualized instruction.
Students from grades 8-10 will be accepted at this time.Qualifications/Skills: Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) training or experience in trauma sensitive environments is an asset.
An ability to build strong relationships with parents is essential.
Experience with students with special needs.
Develop goals and objectives for multi-age classrooms for students with varying physical and emotional conditions.
Monitor Behaviour patterns of children and apply appropriate interventions.
An ability to tailor an individualized curriculum along an outcomes-based/outcomes-developed continuum
May be required to administer medication.
An ability to develop, implement and monitor IPPs for students with mild-moderate developmental disabilities that provides sequential learning and opportunities to integrate with same-age peers in different grades
Other goals for students include increasing independence, enhancing self-esteem and improving social/interpersonal skills
Effective organizational skills and classroom management
An ability and commitment to work as a member of a team in a collaborative work environment
An ability to establish productive relationships with staff and parents
Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training is an asset
A commitment to the Assessment for Learning model
Requirements: All candidates must hold an Alberta Teaching Certificate
Have knowledge of curriculum and teaching experience at those levels/subject areas and demonstrated interpersonal and classroom management skills
