Managing, developing and revising health and safety programs, operating procedures based on assessment of current needs, health and safety legislation, industry standards, best practices and recent trends.
Providing expertise, advice, and consultation to all levels of management, unions, associations and staff on issues and legislative requirements/ obligations (e.g. contraventions to asbestos removal protocols, gas leaks, floods, construction deficiencies, serious critical injuries of staff and students, workplace violence, hazardous waste disposal).
Investigating and responding to health and safety concerns. Where an unsafe condition or process is identified, developing a solution or strategy to remediate the issue.
Acting as main resource for the Multi-Site Joint Health and Safety Committee by providing legislation interpretation and expert advice to the Committee as a whole, coordinating committee member training, arranging workplace inspections, and coordinating Committee follow-up action items.
Assisting Senior Health and Safety Partner in the implementation and maintenance of secondary school safety equipment and procedures in technology, hospitality, science programs (i.e. annual risk assessment of technological facilities and science labs, installation of emergency safety stops and machine guards, lock out procedures and upgrades to shop ventilation, eye-wash stations, chemical storage cabinets, etc.).
Maintain health and safety records pertaining to industrial hygiene testing reports, workplace violence risk assessments and annual water sampling program for lead testing O.Reg. 243/07.
Developing and delivering occupational Health and Safety training based on identifying training needs.
Act as back up for Senior Health and Safety Partner
Minimum Requirements:
Undergraduate degree or post-graduate certificate in a related field, e.g., occupational health and safety, science or environmental science - or comparable work experience
3 years related experience
Recognized health and safety designation or eligibility to obtain: Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or comparable designation
Joint Health & Safety Committee Certificate Parts 1 & 2
Demonstrated experience applying the Occupational Health & Safety Act
Demonstrated experience in occupational hygiene, accident investigation, and health and safety training development and delivery
Superior communication, collaboration, facilitation and negotiations skills with ability to manage conflict and build effective working relationships
Proven ability to write health and safety programs, procedures, investigative reports, and analyze data and trends
Provision of own vehicle for Board business and the requirement to travel to WCDSB sites
Knowledge of Microsoft Office products
Valid First Aid/CPR Certificate Desirable Asset School Board experience
Knowledge of Ministry of Environment regulations (lead in drinking water) Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Fire Code, Electrical Code, Building Code and Education Act.
Experience as a health and safety practitioner in a unionized setting
