Mental Health Counsellor

Duties to Commence: August 23, 2024

Position Description: This position has been designed to provide direct services to students in the area of mental health. This would involve direct counselling for students who have been identified as requiring supports by school leadership or referrals from other staff or parent/guardians. The Mental Health Counsellor will engage with students in one on one or small groups to support them in the social/emotional domain. As well, the Mental Health Counsellors will work with parents/guardians and families in an effort to support students as required.

This position will be based out of a school in St. Albert. The Mental Health Counsellor will have to be flexible in the hours of work, dependent upon the needs of the school community; the work may be before/after school hours or in the evening and possibly weekends.

Qualifications: Formal training in providing counselling services

Preference will be given to candidates with a degree in a related field, such as counselling, psychology, mental health training, or other related field of study. Duties & Responsibilities: Committed to being a model and witness to Christ-centered education values and beliefs.

Apply foundational knowledge about First Nations, Mtis and Inuit for the benefit of all students, and support the Divisions goals towards advancing Truth and Reconciliation

Knowledge of addiction and mental health is required

Familiar with the developmental, educational, emotional, social and recreational needs of children, youth and families

Strong relationship-building skills

Effective time management skills

Takes initiative and is able to work independently as well as collaborate in teams

Skill and knowledge of facilitation, positive communication and creative thinking

Solid comprehension and practice of personal and professional boundaries

Ability to develop supportive relationships with young people

Creative problem-solving and decision-making skills

Comfortable liaising with community members, school staff, community agencies and healthcare providers

Community collaboration/networking skills

Resilience and a commitment to personal development

The successful candidate must provide a criminal record check

The successful candidate must provide proof of licensure or registration with the approved Alberta regulatory college, prior to commencing duties where applicable: Regulated health professions under the Alberta Health Professions Act and Health Disciplines Act will be required to show an original copy of a valid practice permit before commencing their duties

Other professions governed by government acts, college or regulatory body requirements may be required to provide additional documentation.
