Reporting to the Principal/ Designate, the Teacher Assistant-Laboratory assists with Labs that support the science curriculum (General Science, Physics, Chemistry, Geology and Biology) by the preparation and delivery of equipment and supplies.Duties and Responsibilities: prepares and delivers lab equipment, chemical solutions, biological cultures and specimens and related aides and materials required for experiments and demonstrations, utilizing WHMIS where appropriate; explains lab safety and procedures and demonstrates equipment use to teachers as required; troubleshoots lab (e.g. provides replacementequipment); may assist the teacher in supervising students as required (e.g. labs/projects/on field trips)

cleans and stores lab equipment; collects chemical and biological waste, some of which are hazardous; chemically reduces hazardous waste and/or arranges for disposal as required

reviews lab requirements; assists withlabresearch and development by providing information related to equipment/ supply/ replacement availability to teachers and students; confers and collaborates with teachers re modifications

organizes and maintains safe and secure lab storage; codes, labels, stores chemicals according to WHMIS regulations

organizes time and coordinates the collaborative use of equipment and supplies within department and school

plays a role in the departments communication network

monitors materials and equipment inventories/identifies annual requirements; identifies additional requirements and sources product and prices fornew and existing equipment/materials; purchases, prepares requisitions and/or equipment/supply orders; controls and reconciles departmental petty cash as required

verifies goods received; monitors departmental budget/commitments/expenditures

performs maintenance cleaning and minor repairs on instruments; requisitions major repairs

establishes and maintains files

updates/types/formats/collates materials (e.g. information sheets on safety, equipment use, lab preparation information)

operates various types of scientific equipment (e.g. oscilloscopes, spectrophotometer, Van de Graaff generator)

operates standard office equipment including computer (word processing, data entry), photocopier, facsimile, calculator

participates in departmental meetings as required

performs other comparable duties as assigned which are within the area of knowledge and skills required by the job description

Required Qualifications and Experience: Grade 12 Graduation

Completion of first year university science program

Previous experience in a Lab

Knowledge of WHMIS regulations

Working knowledge of laboratory procedures

Ability to operate various types of scientific equipment

Ability to work under pressure and produce results within deadlines

Ability to work with minimal supervision

Working knowledge of office procedures and standard office equipment including personal computers and office software

Good organizational, interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills

Minimum keyboarding skill of 40 wpm OR an equivalent combination of training and experienceDesirable Qualifications and Experience: Completion of two years of a university science program

Knowledge of school science curriculum (including Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate Programs)

Knowledge of School District administrative software

Knowledge of School District operations
