What can I expect from this role?

The Senior Recreational Programs Assistant (RPA) will deliver a variety of science-based Recreational Programs including Summer, P.A. Day and Holiday Camps, Sleepovers and Birthday Parties, geared towards children ages 4-14 years and at times, their accompanying adult chaperones.  As a Senior RPA you will be required to work well independently and as part of a team to deliver science and recreational activities and demonstrations in a safe, organized and engaging manner. You will greet, guide, and supervise program participants in various group sizes, and must be able to effectively respond to participant needs in order to ensure customer satisfaction. Furthermore, you will be responsible for setting up, maintaining, and cleaning up program delivery spaces and supply inventory, in addition to offering support to the coordination of recreational programs as assigned by the department Supervisors or Manager.

Please note that these positions are irregular/on-call with no guarantee of hours, and may include evening, overnight, weekend and statutory holiday work.  Peak program times vary throughout the year.

How do I qualify?


  • All candidates must be certified in Standard First Aid and CPR Level C prior to the start of employment and maintain certification throughout employment
  • Top candidates will be required to obtain a Vulnerable Screening Sector check for this position.
  • Availability during peak periods is a requirement (i.e. March Break, Christmas Break, Summer, P.A. Days).

  • Ability to be enthusiastic and engaging with visitors of all ages
  • Demonstrated experience working with children and youth 4-14yrs 
  • Ability to interact with caregivers and visitors in a professional, responsible and respectful manner as a representative of the Ontario Science Centre

Communication Skills

  • Knowledge of and experience in presentation principles/techniques to deliver creative, engaging, exciting, dramatic and interactive presentations, demonstrations and activities
  • Ability to adapt presentation language level, style, pace and illustrative examples to cater to a wide range of learning abilities/styles.
  • Excellent oral communication and presentation skills to deliver science content

Salary Range: $18.88 - $21.96 per hour

(Note: If a Vulnerable Sector Screening/Check is required, it must also be obtained in person at your local police service.)
