Air Traffic Controller / Flight Service Specialist

NAV CANADA is the private sector, non-share capital corporation that owns and operates Canada's civil air navigation service (ANS).
NAV CANADA co-ordinates the safe and efficient movement of aircraft in Canadian domestic airspace and international airspace assigned to Canadian control. Through its coast to coast to coast operations, NAV CANADA provides air traffic control, flight information, weather briefings, aeronautical information, airport advisory services, and electronic aids to navigation.
ANS facilities include seven area control centres and 41 control towers. The Company also operates 55 flight service stations and eight flight information centres. These facilities are supported by a network of over 1,000 ground-based aids to navigation located across the country.

A career as an air traffic controller or flight service specialist puts you on the front line helping move aircraft safely across Canadian skies. Simply put, it is one of the most rewarding professions available.

We are currently seeking applicants for positions across the country.

Area controllers combine quick-thinking and foresight to keep aircraft at a safe distance as they fly through large sections of airspace called "sectors". They do their job from one of seven Area Control Centres, using radar displays, powerful flight data processors and communications systems to help pilots stay on course and on time.

In control towers at the country's busiest airports, you'll find tower controllers hard at work providing taxi, take off and landing clearances. With a direct view on aircraft, runways and weather conditions, they direct and control aircraft to make sure every movement in these high-density locations occurs safely and efficiently.

Flight service specialists working at Flight Service Stations keep a watchful eye on every departure and arrival, pass traffic information, control vehicles on the ground, and provide runway and weather information. Using radar displays, they also deliver remote airport advisory services to neighbouring facilities.
At the country's eight FICs, specialists provide flight planning services, deliver in-depth interpretive weather information and en route advisories to aircraft operating in Canadian airspace. They also notify emergency services when an aircraft is missing or overdue.


To take charge of a career in air traffic services you need confidence, good multitasking skills, the ability to retain and recall information, and a desire to take on responsibility.

You must be:

  • At least eighteen years old.
  • A Canadian citizen or landed immigrant (have received status).
  • A high school graduate.
  • Able to complete an intensive, full-time training program lasting approximately eight to 26 months (depending on the career stream).
  • For the Montreal Flight Information Region, applicants must be fluently bilingual.
  • Willing to undergo a medical and Secret Level security check.

It takes motivation, commitment and hard work to succeed. Training is full time and intensive, requiring daily study and practice.

Salary Ranges:

Air traffic controller: $49,000 to $140,000
Flight service specialist: $56,000 to $89,000
